THE ESSENCE OF THE PRIMITIVE ROUTE: LUGO – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Enjoy with us the Primitive Route, considered to be the oldest of all the routes of St. James. In this last stage you will discover the authentic Galicia and lose yourself in deserted landscapes. With each step you will find corners overflowing with history, culture and nature.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN LUGO

Lugo, the oldest city in Galicia, with over 200 years of history deserves a visit. Use this day to rest and discover its Roman wall, its impressive old town and its famous gastronomy.

DAY 2: LUGO – SAN ROMÁN DE RETORTA

20km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY

You will leave Lugo through the Porta Miña, the most emblematic gate of the city, and start an easy stage marked by confortable roads that connect small villages. Although it isn’t a long stage, it can become tiresome due to so much tarmac.

DAY 3: SAN OMÁN DE RETORTA – MELIDE

30km, 7-8Hrs DIFFICULTY: MODERATE

On this day, you will move on paths and old forest trails through tiny rural towns. Its difficulty lies in the steep ascents in the first half and steep declines as you get closer to Melide. It’s here where you leave the Primitive Route to join the French Route.

DAY 4: MELIDE – ARZÚA

15km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: MODERATE

This is an easy stage where you can lose yourself in the green, Galician countryside. Huge woodland areas and magical enclaves like Ribadiso make time fly until you reach Arzúa. You can’t leave this town without delighting in its famous cheese.

DAY 5: ARZÚA – O PEDROUZO

20km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY

In this stage you can look forward to a relaxing day traversing rolling hills in the shade of eucalyptus trees. This is one of the easiest stages of the route.

DAY 6: O PEDROUZO – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

20km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY

This is the last day before finishing this experience. The vantage point of Monte do Gozo will give you your first panoramic view of the towers of the cathedral, and just a short walk away you will get to the historic area. Santiago offers pilgrims the reward for all their efforts.
