THE ESSENCE OF THE FRENCH ROUTE
Discover this stretch of the French route and live an experience that changes peoples’ lives. You will walk through the green region of Galicia, along trails full of history, and at the end of every day, you will arrive in magical places where you can relax and enjoy the once in a lifetime surroundings.
DAY 1: ACCOMMODATION IN SARRIA
Sarria, at just over 100 km from Santiago, has become the starting point of the Camino for many pilgrims. Take advantage of your time in this 800 year old town by taking a walk along its river promenade, losing yourself in the old town or tasting its delicious gastronomy.
DAY 2: FROM SARRIA – PORTOMARÍN
22km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY
Through giant chestnut trees and hundred year old oaks, we enter into rural Galicia. With an attainable distance, this stage doesn’t present any difficulties except its uneven terrain and constant changes in surface. Just before arriving at your destination, you will cross the river Miño, whose waters hide the ancient town of Portomarín.
DAY 3: PORTOMARÍN – PALAS DE REI
24km, 5-6Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY
Split by the Sierra de Ligonde that divides the councils of Portomarín and Monterroso, this is one of the most man-made stages, as the entirety of the route is next to a main road. Making the trip more pleasant are the old pilgrim hospitals, dozens of stone crosses and countless examples of Romanesque architecture.
DAY 4: FROM PALAS DE REI – ARZÚA
29km, 6-7Hrs DIFFICULTY: MODERATE
This is the longest stage found within Galicia. Its uneven terrain, commonly referred to as ‘leg-breaking’ makes it more difficult to maintain a good rhythm. However, the endless ups and downs are compensated for by the gorgeous rural paths, medieval bridges and magical enclaves like Ribadiso.
DAY 5: FROM ARZÚA – O PEDROUZO
19km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY
This is a more comfortable stage with a more gentle profile. You will move forward on quiet forest trails, crossing woods and meadows that connect small villages which have been linked for centuries to the route of St. James.
DAY 6: FROM O PEDROUZO – SANTIAGO
21km, 4-5Hrs DIFFICULTY: EASY
Now you can almost breathe ‘Compostela’. In this stage you won’t find any difficulties in getting to Santiago except the uphill climb of Monte do Gozo. Nevertheless, it will have been worth it as from its vantage point you will be able to make out for the first time the towers of the cathedral. Just 4 km away, the ‘Plaza del Obradoiro’ offers pilgrims the reward for all of their efforts.
